John Fred & His Playboy Band

Today's pick is a funky beat-track from John Fred and his Playboy Band, the b-side of the wonderful bubblegumy "Judy In Disguise". Had this tune in my head for month, so I thought I pass it on.

The Cherokees - Minnie The Moocher

Today were going all the way to Australia. Their very own Cherokees have given Cab Calloways classic a jolly little R&B/Beat-treatment and made it a tad more danceable (in my opinion).

By the way: Is that an autograph on the label?

Manu Dibango - Big Blow

Allright? Here we go again after a while. Passed me course so I got some more time to post some more choons in future. Anyway, here a nice tune for a summers day.

Hear ya soon.

And here a little 12" remix: http://alldaythumbsucker.blogspot.com/2008/08/super-koumba-12-is-probably-re.html

Long time no hear. But here you go with some New Orleans Swamp-Funk by Dr. John. I'm off, "Watching the Dead" has just begun.

Curtis Mayfield - Right on for the Darkness

The soundtrack for the London Mayoral Elections...

The Show Stoppers - What can a man do

I fished this choon out of a 50p bargain box, mainly because of the A-side "Ain't nothing but a House party", and was positively surprised when I turned it over and discovered this Stomper. A bit of a Four Tops sound-a-like but absolutely monster. Runs over and over again on me little PT01 since two weeks, so I thought I share.

Donnie Elbert - Do wat'cha wanna

I've been neglecting the pre-65 music a bit, so I thought it's time for some R&B today. B-side to the Twisted Wheel classic "A Little Piece of Leather", but well worth a play, too

The Jimmy Castor Bunch - King Kong Pt.1

It's Boogie Down Sunday again! Yesterday we had Banana, so today it is King Kong.

E. K. Bunch - Banana

Quick Post. I'm off to Set the Tone 67 (Skinhead Reggae do). So here's my warming up music. "Skinhead like it" and it's good against the runs, too.
Allright, got some Loafers to polish.

Break Machine - Are you ready

Just watched some Beat Street snippets on Youtube, which brought me in touch with my Oldschool Hip Hop side again. So I thought I search for some Electro Funk. Et voila, here you go!

Get down!

Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders - Um, Um, Um, Um, Um,

I forgot to wish everybody a happy St. Georges Day yesterday, so I am doing it belatedly today accompanied by some English Beat by Wayne Fontana, the man that sets cars on fire (not with his music, but petrol). Here with a Major Lance cover.

Honey Cone - When will it end

I'm pretty much fed up with my job at the moment, but I fortunately know that it will end in a few month time. Honey Cone on the other hand obviously don't know when it will end.

I tend to buy records on the Holland/Dozier/Holland labels Hot Wax and Invictus blindly, and have not been disappointed so far. This tune proofs my buying policy once again. Yer good olde HDH recipe for a burner record: Funny intro, driving beat, thumping bass, funny interlude. It always works.

The C.O.D.'s - Michael

The first days of jumper-weather (to be exact youcanwearajumperwithoutfreezingyournipplesof-weather). So here is something uplifting for a nice spring day.

Jimmy "Bo" Horne - It's your sweet love

After a long without any attempts to keep me in shape, I decided to treat me to some physical activity (except going to buy beer that is). So I dug out an old pair of trainers and went to a Locking class. Yes, Locking (Campbellocking to be anal), the ancient art of throwing your limps around to funky music. After I managed to crawl back home again, I tried to find some lockable music in my box, and that's what I decided upon.

Try it yourself, watch this first, and than boogie in your living room to Jimmy's choon.

The Vulcans - Dr. Spock

This synthesized version of King Stitts "Herbsman Shuffle" is by the Vulcans, actually a guy called Ken Elliot, who played Synth over Riddims from Trojans vaults. I found this one in Nudge Records, who have a big Reggae stock.

I don't know if it's just my weird taste but I really like this choon. It's something different and would make a nice change at Skinhead-Reggae-Dos, instead of playing the standard records to death.

King Curtis & The Kingpins - Pop Corn Willie

Alright. I'm about to lose my blog-virginity with this post so let's get it on.

I decided to start off with a bang. This track is 2:20 minutes pure funky soul explosion.
I bought this record along with some others in a (very) drunken state from a record dealer in a club. Good-natured as I am, I gave him 60 quid and my address, and the records actually arrived a few days later. Very trustworthy man that was.
King Curtis puts his porn-sax on top of a funky uptempo track, complete with a drummer who gets down like Animal from the Muppets and a nice break around 1:10. Don't try dancing to this one!
